Range Standing Orders that must be followed
The Griffith Pistol Club Inc has adopted the following rules to ensure the safe and efficient operation of shooting facilities available to members. These rules apply to all target shooting matches and shooting activities conducted by the club.
RANGE STANDING ORDERS
OPENING & CLOSING THE RANGE
1. ONLY RANGE OFFICERS MAY OPEN RANGES and PROVIDE RANGE ACCESS FOR MEMBERS AND SHOOTERS.
The RED flag to be flown from the pole at the range entrance gate.
2. RANGE SETUP BEFORE SHOOTING
FIREARMS MUST NOT BE TAKEN INTO THE SHOOTING BENCHES/BAYS.
* Open Range Register and have ALL persons record details for attendance requirements.
* ALL SHOOTERS and VISITORS must sign the range attendance register, regardless of whether shooting or visiting.
* Firearms licences and SSAA membership cards to be sighted. Unlicensed shooters cannot participate in range activities until they have completed satisfactorily a P650 application form. The Range Officer will authorise the person to shoot, sign the form and file for future inspection. Any applicant who cannot complete successfully the application form cannot shoot. This P650 form can then be forwarded to the Firearms Registry for a determination.
* Licenced non-members must sign the range attendance book as a visitor and pay any fees.
* Collect range and target fees from shooters as required and record.
* Locate targets at the required position on each range.
* Erect red flags on each target mound.
3. OPEN RANGE and BEGIN SHOOTING
* FIREARMS CAN BE BROUGHT ONTO THE FIRING AREA OR BENCHES
* Shooting is to proceed ONLY under the direction of the Range Officer.
4. FINISH SHOOTING and CLOSING RANGE
CLEAR and REMOVE ALL FIREARMS
* Patch all targets
* Collect and store targets, patches, silhouettes and other fixtures that could be re-used or damaged by weather or trespassers.
* Store attendance register and score sheets securely.
* Close range register.
* Take down RED ‘RANGE IN USE’ flag at the target mounds and at the front gate.
* Check range entrance gate is locked.
RANGE OPERATIONS
- GENERAL RULES
Only persons with Category H licences, with P650Forms that have been satisfactorily completed or with special approval from the NSW Firearms Registry can shoot target pistols.
No pistol is to be loaded until the competitor has been instructed to load by the Range Officer.
Pistol magazines are not to be loaded other than at the firing line after the command to load has been given by the Range Officer.
Holstered pistols cannot be taken from the holster unless instructed to do so by the Range Officer, or in a safe area designated for cleaning or storage as designated by the range officer.
Loaded pistols must be handled with particular care because of their short barrels. The muzzle of a loaded pistol must be held pointed down range at 45o with the shooter facing the target and with fingers away from the trigger.
Unloaded pistols on benches should be left with their magazine out, action open and muzzle pointing down range.
Full metal jacketed projectiles cannot be used on any range.
Only approved targets can be used.
Eye and ear protection and enclosed footwear must be worn.
At least two persons must be present when one is shooting.
Smoking is not permitted on the range at any stage.
- RANGE RULES
The Range Officer has total control over range activities.
Range Commands and Procedures. All commands and instructions are to be give by the Range Officer in a clear, loud voice that is able to be heard by all present.
Red means Danger. A red flag at the entrance gate (and up-range at the furthest line of targets) means that shooters are in attendance at the range and permission from the Range Officer is required before entering the Range Danger Zone forward of the firing line.
Shooting is not to commence until flags, frames and targets have been placed in accordance with Range Standing Orders and the Range has been cleared by the Range Officer.
No-one may go forward of the firing line without the permission of the Range Officer. The Range Officer will indicate that it is safe for the target crew or other designated persons to go forward of the firing line by calling “THE RANGE IS CLEAR”.
Probationary members must be supervised by an experienced shooter at all times.
Junior shooters and children at the range must be supervised and not permitted near the firing line unless accompanied by a Range Officer, Club Coach or a supervisor delegated by the Range Officer. Junior shooters must be over 12 years old and either have a P650 Form satisfactorily completed or a Minors Permit before being allowed to shoot.
Only one shooter is to be at each firing point. Coaches must stand behind or clear of the shooter when the firearm is loaded.
Any firearm malfunction must be reported to the Range Officer immediately.
No one, including the Range Officer, is to touch another person’s firearm(s) without the permission of the owner.
Firearms are not to be removed from the firing point until cleared by the Range Officer.
Handling of firearms on the firing line is not permitted when the range is cleared for persons to go forward of the firing line.
Firearms are to be cleaned only in the designated safe area. Safe areas must be supervised by an experienced club member.
Adjustment to firearms that compromise range safety are not permitted behind the firing point (i.e. lightening of triggers, snapping actions, testing the fit of ammunition, etc).
Only firearms of a type and calibre, as approved on the Club’s Licence, can be used.
Smoking is not permitted on the firing line.
Alcohol or drugs are not to be consumed or taken by a shooter prior to or during shooting.
- HANDING OVER RANGE CONTROL
A Range Officer may hand over range control to any other range officer provided that range officer accepts that responsibility. Griffith Pistol Club Captain and Vice Captain have overarching control at all times when present.
- RANGE SAFE AREA
Designated areas behind the firing line are safe areas and firearms may be stored but no handling of firearms under any circumstances unless transporting to vehicle or to firing line. If firearms are to be cleaned or repaired consult range officer for an available shooting bay facing downrange.
* Firearms may be taken from a vehicle onto the range safe area at any time as long as they have been cleared by range officer.
* Ammunition is not to be placed in the firearm for any reason.
* Firearms must have the action held open and magazine(s) removed.
* Firearms not being used should be secured in a case or bag or placed in a vehicle.
* Pistols may be removed from the holster and transferred into storage/transportation boxes only, but only once cleared by range officer.

5. MATCH COMMANDS
LOAD
Place the ammunition in the magazine and insert into the pistol or place the ammunition into the cylinders and close or place the loaded round into the chamber and shut. At all times control the pistol with the muzzle pointing in a safe direction down range with the the finger outside the trigger guard. The number of cartridges loaded must comply with the rules of the match being shot.
ARE YOU READY?
This prepares shooters for the FIRE command.
If not ready, call NOT READY and Range Officer will acknowledge.
FIRE
This means start firing at the appropriate target.
CEASE FIRE
Stop firing immediately, pointing the muzzle in a safe direction down range with the finger outside the trigger guard.
UNLOAD SHOW CLEAR
Remove the magazine, lock action open, unload magazine or unload cylinders and make ready for Range Officer’s inspection.
REMOVE
The pistol can be secured and removed from the firing point.
NB Some commands may vary slightly with different types of matches.
6. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
If an EMERGENCY arises during a shooting period the Range Officer is to call “CEASE FIRE CEASE FIRE” in a very load and clear voice and follow procedures to close the range.
In a medical emergency the Range Officer may delegate another Range Officer or experienced member to complete the procedure for closing the range while s/he commences first aid (or vice versa, if the other Range Officer has greater first aid qualifications or knowledge).

NB: If the nominated shoot has been completed and there are other members who wish to shoot another sanctioned match or reshoot a match with another caliber then that can ONLY be completed once the nominated calendar shoot has finished allowing two scored / compulsory shoots per visit.
NB: Nominated qualified Range officers for each club shoot are responsible for the picking up of the club guns from the armorer and cleaning if so required. Range officers can delegate another responsible person to run matches if so required as the Range officer has control of the whole range for that day. Griffith Pistol Club Captain and Vice Captain have overarching control at all times when present.
NB: A current certified range officer must be present for all shooting on the range, be it practice or a match. If you do not know who is a range officer, contact one of the committee members and they will endeavor to arrange one to attend if possible.
- Field pistol will be held at the Rankins Springs Range – 2nd Sunday of each month February through to November.
- The main club shoots are nominated above. All members and new members especially are encouraged to attend these shoots. Scored shoots can also be held on any other Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. These are the only days when scored attendances will be recorded. Only sanctioned matches can be shot as per range license and scored as required by the match rules. These can be accepted as your yearly shoot attendance only if shot to the match requirements. (minimum 2 persons including R/O)
- Practice shooting is allowed if accompanied by a current H category license holder and a responsible person any day as per range license caliber restrictions.
- MINIMUM two persons present at all times if shooting is to be commenced.
- Shooters are responsible for their own safety. Only sanctioned matches are covered under SSAA insurance and these are the only ones that can be shot on the Griffith Pistol Club Range. If you injure yourself outside of these matches or practice any unsafe firearms handling or shooting at unsanctioned targets only YOU are liable and the club will NOT be liable for any injury you sustain as a result. You may be liable for damages and or suspension from the club if these rules are breeched.
- NO copper jacketed, FMJ, TMJ projectiles are allowed. Coated lead and copper plated projectiles are allowed.
- Monthly club meetings held 1st shoot of the month at 1pm. All members as well as new/prospective members are encouraged to attend.
- Annual General meeting 1st shoot day in October start at 1pm.
- P650 forms MUST be completed correctly for unlicensed shooters @ $10 per visit by fully licensed current members only. One on one supervision with P650 shooters is required. Only full Cat H firearms license holders are allowed to supervise P650 shooters. If unsure speak to committee member for advice. Compliance is a must, non negotiable.
